Message What limits safe tunable power in a set up is fuel octane.
What limits the set up is restrictions in air flow and restrictions in fuel flow.
A tuner with the proper tools can only extract as much power as the fuel allows without knock.
A lot of power can be extracted from higher boost and higher ignition timing, but pump gasoline dramatically limits how much boost and timing you can add before knock occurs.
91 octane is extremely low quality and is a huge limiter of safe power.
Engines make power based on the volume of air they can move. The more restrictive the parts are in a engines set up, the less power the engine will make at the same boost level.
In order to make power in a restricted set up, you need to run higher boost, running higher boost requires more octane.
Higher altitudes such as Denver being a mile high, have less available air in the same space due to lower atmospheric pressure. So in order for a turbo to produce same boost in Denver as at Sea Level, the turbo has to spin faster to make the same pressure. The turbo having to spin faster creates more heat that causes the engine to knock sooner at the same boost level.
So to make the same power as you would at sea level, it requires higher octane fuel.
So yes tuning in high altitude is going to produce lower power numbers due to less available air, and because the turbo is working harder to produce the same boost at higher altitude, the engine is going to knock sooner causing the need to run lower timing at the same boost level with low octane pump fuel.
We tune with equipment that allows us to hear engine knock that allows us to know the limit of safe power for the fuel being used.
We have made over 500 wheel HP at the wheels with stock engines and stock turbos on good breathing set ups with E85 fuel that allows aggressive tuning without knock.
We have tuned just about every turbo available for Z to power levels that exceed the ratings for the turbos air flow when we tune with fuel that allows us to be that aggressive safely.
Our ability to extract power should not be questioned.
Safety is our main concern, if you live a mile high, only want to tune with 91 octane, run parts that restrict air flow, we are only going to give you as much power as is safe without knock.
