as the motor heats up and cools down. It uses a hydraulic piston and makes constant micro-adjustments to the belts tension. Once set at install the belt should never stretch or lose tension over the life span of the belt. If the belt is in fact stretched that means the tensioner was not positioned/adjusted correctly and the belt was damaged by incorrect install. I have removed 25 year old belts so delicate that you could tear them by hand and the belt tension was still spot on.
