Remember these were designed in the 80s. Fancy plastics weren't really all that available yet. Many cars use ABS for their boost hoses now, with mixed results. Metal is easy to fabricate and cheap. Yes Ash could have looked into injection molding his IC piping, but that would have probably doubled their cost.
