Message Most of the cars in the pictures are DOM 1.75", 0.120" Wall as per NASA CCR, since they where expected them to be over 3000#. Accept for the K Sport 350Z is Chromoly, the Red Z32 is now just @ 3000# & will be under soon (but we did not know that at the time & erred on safety & matching the rules). The white Z32 will be under 3000# as well. And the White 350Z I don't think we have weighed yet. At the end of the day it is the customers choice as to the final details of the cage.

We direct most customers towards DOM instead of chromoly because DOM will absorb the energy of an impact & decelerate the energy through deformation more so. Chromoly being "stiffer" will translate that energy into the driver (& passengers) body more so. Unless they are building a record breaking or highly competitive vehicle, then the option of using Chromoly is more on the table. The two metals weight damn near the exact same amount. However most rule books (CCRs) allow a thinner walled OR smaller tube to be used what you create the cage with Chromoly. This is where the weight saving comes into play, by size not material.

Stress relief comes from a variety of ways. I can't give up all of the secrets to the recipe, but I will say that minimal relief is needed when the design & construction process does not put much "boing" into the cage.

For chromoly specific you need to heat the welded joints (the HAZ) with a certain process. It involves localizing the heat source,, heating to a specific temp, time frames, etc. There are heat reactive markers that you can use to know when you have reached the appropriate temperature on the joint too. This process needs to be logged for most race groups. Without the process the metal is said to be "brittle" & you can fail a safety inspection.
