Message As for notifying the border control 72 hrs previous I only had to fax the VIN # to them with an expected date of arrival and location of crossing. I bought my car from a guy in Madison Wisconsin. He was kind enough to grab the temp permit for me.
Dont forget ... the buyer needs insurance.

Paid the RIV fee and some taxes and I was on my way.

One thing to Note ... the buyer should stop on both sides of the border. I figured I only had to declare the purchase upon entering Canada but was told upon arrival that I could be charged by US authorities for not indicating to them that I was exporting the car??? Made no sense to me but the Canadian border agent seemed genuinely concerned.

Just follow instructions on the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) site. Things may have changed since 2004.
