However, if there are gaping holes right next to the speaker enclosure, it will sound worse than no holes, or holes further from the enclosure. This is obviously not the case though, when there's an "air hole" specifically designed in a speaker enclosure. That plastic, water protector under the door panel is better than not having one at all. Enclosures that fit snug and don't leave gaping holes will serve much better sound than shotty enclosures and places where air can escape quickly. Not a highly scientific example, but it's proof to my ears!
