Larger intake pipes have less restriction, and make it easier for the turbo to spool up. The larger pipes after the turbo also have lower restriction which helps. There will be a point that the piping will be too big, and the air volume will start delaying the pressure rise at the back of the valve but so far it doesn't look like 3" piping has that problem.
