| I've thought about this some more... Of course the inlet side piping has pressure drop. It has to. Otherwise there would be no flow from the filter to the compressor inlet. So in actuality, we want the pressure drop from atmospheric (filter) to the compressor inlet to be as large as possible. We do that by making the inlet piping as big as possible (or, in the drag car example, no piping at all). So in summation, we want all the pipes to be as smooth as possible, with as few bends as possible. We want the inlets to be as large as possible. And we want the pressure side piping to be the proper balance between flow (large piping) and pressure drop (small piping). It is generally agreed that that balance is right around 2.5" pressure piping.
