The combustion process takes time. Firing the mixture before TDC is an attempt to have the combustion process complete at about the same time as the cylinder pressure maxes out so all the energy is used pushing the piston down. It seems like it would slow the piston down but inertia helps overcome that. It has been explained to me that detonation is when the mixture is ignited by excess pressure or another ignition source such as incandescent carbon buildup. When the plug fires and the detonation occurs, the two flame fronts meet and the result is a very focused pressure and temperature spike. That is the ping we hear and what pokes holes in pistons.
KKROFFTNow occurs everywhere, simultaneously. But it doesn't have to be experienced the moment it happens. Every now that ever was is still exactly when it was, when it was now. Then, in terms of perception, is nothing more than all the nows that are no longer now. Thus, the difference between now and then is when. --The Waystoppers Users' Manual
