I think the main thing to note here is how making the combustion chamber as efficient as possible allows you to run less ignition advance (which is actually desireable). You just have to make sure you LPP (location of peak pressure) stays at 14 btdc. The faster you can make the fuel burn and keep LPP where you need it the better and more effiecient your engine will be. It will have less "time" to detonate so in effect you shorten the detonation window.
