Message of folks prefer to separate before the pull. Has to do with the extraction angles involved as well as how much space is in front the the parked Z (so hoist has enough room to move away).

If separating the tranny first - good idea to also get a tranny scissor jack. Just makes it a lot easier and for the re-install too.

Hopefully your Z is a 5 spd - the autotrannys are really pretty heavy too and need a more durable tranny jack.
