Message of a speedometer board rework I did for a customer. My old aging equipment had been slowly dying off on me one by one so I broke down and purchased some new equipment. A couple of the main pieces were a rework station and a desoldering gun.

My old gun broke down a couple of weeks ago and when I looked at the price of what they go for now I was really surprised. Back in the day when I bought my last gun the price was around $800. You can now get the same gun for under $200 if you shop around. The rework station I bought is awesome! I made a unboxing video of that and will try to post it on YouTube when I can.

Anyway, I know how everyone likes pictures so here are a few of the speedometer board rework. The speedometer board in these pictures is the style found in US 1990 and 1991 gauge clusters. They are a real pain to work on. To many parts and to many areas to have to pay close attention to when rebuilding them.

The main IC removed.

Ready to remove components.

All capacitors are checked after they are removed from the board.

Capacitors and transistors removed.

Reassembly after the board is cleaned. The two pictures above show the board with a lot of solder flux on it after removing the components. I missed the opportunity to take pictures of it after cleaning, sorry. Everything is resoldered including the feed through holes which connect the top and bottom circuit layers.

Ready for test.
