Message SO, I have been reading up on how important compression numbers are, and me in my limited knowledge of motors finally felt the need to check mine. I've been building and building on my car with all the bolt ons i can afford, new turbos, intercoolers, piping, injectors, etc...etc..., but never thought to check compression. I didnt even own the tools! So, I went to O-rielly, bought the best kit i could find, came with the long extension for cars like ours (Would have been easier if it were longer....) and I was set. I come home, start the car, let it warm up for a good while, turn it off, pull the fuel pump relay, pull the coil packs and spark plugs and get started. I start with #1, crank for a good 10 seconds, check the gauge, 93 psi. WTF?? I undo everything and start again. 93 psi. I think, the gauge is broken for sure. So I hook it up to my air compressor. Works fine. Shit. Check the second cylinder, 89psi. WHAT!?!? I go on down the line and my readings range between 89psi and 93psi. HOLY CRAP. This is far less than the acceptable numbers I've been reading about. What I can't understand, is why is my car still so powerful? It dyno'd at 467hp on 93 octane at 18psi just a few weeks ago. Not as high as I had hoped, but still a decent number. Surely I did something wrong, right?
