Overkill? Maybe, BUT it is by far the cleanest solution and the most "proper". It may cost you $20, and 1.5 hours of work. Womp womp.

Back in the day, I tapped everything off of my radio, and it seriously was a clusterfuck of wires behind the radio. Gross, unclean, not easy to troubleshoot/diagnose, a hassle to remove the radio for whatever reason, annoying to add a new electronic device, etc.

How many accessories will it take before it becomes too much? A fuse tap was made primarily for the lazy, or people that really only want to add one or two accessories. Beyond that, it is clearly a bandaid solution to the "proper" solution I mentioned. Using a tap to the rear defogger or radio or anything is simply the same as saying that your local Best Buy does a completely tremendous job up to OEM quality when installing their radios and alarm systems. Poo that. Poo poo poo.

All electronic functions of the car go to the fuse box in the driver's footwell. What I stated is doing the same thing for any other electronics you have in the car. Don't tap 6 gauges, boost controller, radar, launch controller, etc all onto a fuse bridge or multiple ones. That's Mickey Mouse that it's Donald Duck. That's so Donald Duck that it's Pluto. That's so Pluto that it's Goofy.

Put the fuse box where your ECU is. How many spare fuses do you have sitting at home? Don't have any? Spend $5 and get a million or just raid the auto wreckers. How many spare OEM relays do you have laying around that you've never ever used? Use one! Oh look, you have some 12 ga wire laying around, use it (even that's over kill!). Look, solder, you're going to use 27 cents worth! Fuse block? Go look on eBay. From $5 to $20, you get a variety of decent ones that look clean and have a cover. Pho Shizzle T Dizzle.

Use the same hole you route your amp wire through. No extra work needed. It's SIMPLE, and in the future, if you want to add another gauge, wire it to the new fuse block in your ECU area.

A whole fuse is overkill for a single gauge? Okay, fuse 3 gauges on one port/fuse. One fuse for below the radio, one fuse for your A pillar.

I personally have a fuse for every gauge I have (because who cares, fuses are cheap, and I have tons of room in my fuse block), boost controller, radar detector, sirius xm unit, dedicated USB phone charger, launch controller, everything.

Overkill? Maybe, but it's essentially the right way, and definitely the most cleanest.
