Their motto isn't to be Toyota in size, but rather make cars for people who enjoy driving. I've owned a Mazda for over 10 years now. Pretty damn reliable, just not happy about the body rust (mostly specific to Protege, Protege5 and the 3). I hope they have improved that. Other than that, the only issues I have had have been sway bar end links that seem to call it quits every 100kish miles, motor mounts that wear out after 150k miles, and brake calipers that seize up. That's it. You could almost call the sway bar end links and motor mounts wear and tear considering the miles and abuse I put to the car (auto-x, generally drove aggressively and beat on).
