the pipes pass underneath the framing rails because the car had been hit in the front driver's side. It was a minimal amount, maybe 3/16" around the bottom lip of the framing rail where the pieces are spot-welded together. In all other cases though it is not necessary to cut/grind anything. The key is to put all the pipes in without the clamps tightened, or at least just put one clamp on each pipe with the coupler so you can move the pipes around a bit until everything is in place cleanly and then strap everything down with the remaining clamps. People paint themselves into a corner by starting at one end of the system and clamping everything into place as they add pipes. This will inevitably lead to a situation where the pipes will appear not to fit but keeping everything loose until all of the pipes are in place will prevent this from happening.
