This winter I will be installing some GT28rs. I plan to eventually do ALL the mods to max them out (700 crank?) My problem is: the engine has an estimated 120k miles on it and even though it feels great, runs smooth, and seemingly burns no oil.... I would be a fool to continue climbing the HP with the same bearings and possibly pistons/rings that I have now.I've done all my own work and I'm pretty meticulous.... I'm very anal about how exact/ clean things are and can follow instructions pretty clearly. I've done almost everything except rebuild an engine.... yes I'm still a rebuild virgin. I'm a little terrified of doing it but I am willing to, I just need some solid advice. I can do what everyone is probably thinking.... just buy a rebuilt longblock and be done with it..... but I think rebuilding the engine myself would bring about a certain pride and satisfaction of rebuilding an engine with my own two hands, so what would you (those who have experienced either or both scenarios) recommend: rebuild it myself or buy it rebuilt? If I rebuild it myself is it the sort of thing that I can follow a textbook line by line? OR is it like grandma's cooking, the seasoning is not on the shelf, it's in her hands and it's something that I would have to sacrifice a couple incorrectly built engines to the Z gods to master... or at least hold my max HP goal for about 60k miles. Is this a fantasy that cannot be attained by the average gearhead in a regular house garage? I understand I would have to bring the block to a machinist, but is it the sort of thing that not just any shop can machine? Would plastigauge cut it or would I have to buy a set of measurement tools? Would anyone think Ash would be willing to show me if I bring the block to his shop and pay him?.... he's only an hour away.
*disclaimer*: all that I say may be true or I may be completely wrong and I accept that.... please, it is your duty as another person on the internet to impolitely tell me how wrong I am :) "The dreaded 2nd windshiled wiper swipe when you turn it off its almost like tis showing you that it's boss, and it doesn't have to stop when you tell it to :("-College Boy (discussion on ptu relocation) "No good reason to put it there anyway. -Bernie (NoVA) False -vorpalZ False. -Bernie (NoVA) You're correct, there are 3 good reasons -vorpalZ False. -Bernie (NoVA) Wow, right again, just remembered another, make that 4 -vorpalZ" XD
