I'm a former drag racer as well, and was just as disenchanted as you when I first started looking into it. But having just done my first HPDE last week, I can tell you there is a LOT more involved than drag racing. So many more things can go wrong out there. Turns really up the aunty ;-) - It's definitely worth it to have the instructor / levels for your first few events. Although I do agree you should be able to move up the ranks quicker (and I wish it was more affordable). Look for local Porsche / Corvette clubs in your area - many times a club will rent out the track (and provide instruction), and you can have a day of racing for far less $ than a NASA event.
