You can still put an engine through all of its loading/RPM ranges on an engine dyno which would cover any scenario that would be present when the engine is in chassis. We do 100% of our rating (fuel/timing/derate/etc/etc) development on engine dynos at Caterpillar. It is very effective. Additionally, with the right equipment (watlow valves) you can simulate different intake/exhaust restrictions (2.5 vs 3" exhaust for example) and lots of other variables
