Message -Hobby industry

-Lack of capital to keep parts on hand

-Lack of capital to have proper equipment or tools on hand

-Understaffed

-Each build is unique, runs into its own set of problems and when problems occur, things get costly and often times jobs become unprofitable. This is why companies who do packages excel. They are doing the same build on every single car. One build is not using x brand and y brand parts.

- As the business bleeds money, shop owners are robbing peter to pay paul, meaning older builds continue to sit and newer builds are keeping the doors open.

- Customers don't get charged enough, everyone wants a hook up.

-Parts are bought online because of sales tax and in general install shops don't get the best rates, so they are only making money on labor as customers often bring their own parts. Sometimes customers buy wrong parts and you're stuck with the headache of waiting on new parts and the extra time it takes.

-Quality parts not used, resulting in constant issues that are expected to be fixed for free or at a discounted rate.

- Lack of concentration, shops try to do too many things at once, parts sales, manufacturing, advertising, meets, builds, etc and things get put on the backburner. Shops who tend to focus on specific platforms and installs tend to excel over those that try to be everything.

- Risk to reward ratio. Charge a customer $5,000 in labor for a build, takes 3 months, do one thing wrong and you're replacing a $15,000 motor that you didn't supply the parts for. Now you have to do 3 more builds perfectly to make up for the build you just ruined.

When you eliminate all of the problems I posted and the shop keeps parts on hand, has capital, has packages instead of throwing a random assortment of parts at the car and the customers are charged enough for the business to be profitable you end up with shops like UGR, AMS, Switzer.

That's not to say every other shop is ran poorly or there aren't shops that are affordable and cater to everyone that don't do excellent jobs, it's just not likely and many of them go years without their dirty laundry being aired so everyone assumes they are a great shop.

The Z32 is one of the serious Japanese performance cars that is revered by owners of four-cylinder front-drivers, and one way that opinions on cars will always fall is that looking "cool" is nowhere near as good as looking -niiiccceee-. Kels300Z 00:08:35 11/16/04
