| The absolute truth about paint is this: There is nothing like OEM. It is not possible to get as good a finish outside a factory (orange rind texture excepted). When a car is first painted it is clean. The surface is also perfect (there is some minor bodywork done at a factory in specific areas at times). Dipping the body into tanks of surface coating chemicals and then robotic spraying in ideal environmental conditions, produces a hard and THIN coating. ALL aftermarket jobs are THICKER and SOFTER and most assuredly, prone to chipping. I am not saying a car cannot be repainted to an artistic, show winning finish. The issue is that such a finish will not stand of to stone and neighboring door impacts. A typical OEM finish is approximately .003 thick, while aftermarket finishes average .008.
