Message	ur mechanic/friend still wont warranty his work if you use them. That leaves you in the position of assuming responsibility in the event something fails, no matter the cause. Of course, your badass mma friend would almost assuredly give you the guilt trip and "I told you so" then charge you for doing whatever he feels is necessary at that point (essentially an open invitiation to rip you off). Maybe at that point you wont be friends anymore, or you'll get a friend who is even more of a badass to teach him a lesson. Bottom line: At this point, is it worth the extra $400 bucks for all that potential aggravation? Either get a new mechanic (and new friends) who is cool with using rebuilds or buck up and pay Nissan.
