Message I noticed on one of my posts there was a few people asking how I like pulling the engine and trans together vs. separating them and then pulling the engine. This is my personal view on how to do this, please don't take this as THEE only way to do this cause there's more than one way to skin a cat or in this instance pull an engine.

I always leave the engine and trans attached when I pull engines. Wether an fc, fd, mk4, Z32, 240, miata, mr2, etc.. I have a Z engine pull down to a couple hours and here's how I do it....

1. Get the Z securely in the air so it will not fall on you. A lift is best.
2. Double check to make sure car is solid and not unstable.
3. Remove mid pipes, driveshaft(mark the shaft for realignment later)
4. While the car is in the air drain all coolant, oil, and trans fluid.
5. Remove 4 bolts holding the shifter bracket to trans, and the 1 bolt and nut through the shifter bushing as well. 5 total
6.disconnect slave cylinder and secure it, now you should only have 8 bolts on the bottom. 2 engine mounts, 6 trans mount bolts.

Now lets jump to the top.
1. remove your already drained radiator. And intake tubes
2 reove balance tube, and fuel rails on plenum. A little tip to removing the three 1" pieces of fuel that go to the rail. Cut them immediately if they give you any issue.
3.disconnect engine harness and pull it out of the way.
4. Disconnect ps pump, if your ac works leave the compressor in the car with the ps still hooked up.
5. disconnect Heater core hoses, ground by battery attached to the firewall.

I prefer to strap up the engine before I loosen them from the mounting points and I do that starting from the front and working towards the back.
I start at the top and drop the strap on the front side of the motor mount and let the strap drop it to floor making sure it doesn't go around anything it's not suppose to. Then slide the strap between the oil pan and cossmember and back up the other side still being in front of the motor mount back to the top of the plenum.
drop the strap back down to floor Agian but this time secure were the engine and trans meet, bring it back up to the top, tue a secure not, double, triple check that knot and now it on to the next, the bumper.

That's right off comes the fascia, crash bar, and your intake system. This will allow your cherry picker to get close enough to the engine to strap up.

So now you should have your exhaust, driveshaft, radiator, intake pipes, fuel system, fluids, harness, hoses and fascia all out of the equation which just leaves a trans attached to a motor and 8 bolts.

Secure the engine strap to the cherry picker, and jump under the car to remove the 2 engine mount nuts, and 6 trans mount bolts. The rear of the tranny will sag a little, that ok IMO , I hope you have a plug or drained your trans fluid.

Start jacking up the engine until the engie mount studs are visiblely out of the mounting holes. Wether you putting in or taking out here is what makes it difficult, the front crossmember. Now just start lifting up the engine till it doesnt want to lift anyomore. If you lift the car youve gone to high lower it down. The objective is to have a little tension on the engine, than just grab the entire engine strap and rock the engine till the tension and your rocking will pull the engine up over the crossmember.
Now just make sure there's nothing attached that was missed that would stop it for coming out, if there's nothin than keep jacking up the engine till you can pull it out of the bay.

Do what you do to relax

I apologize ahead of time about my spelling and grammar. I'm a mechanic, not an English major. .
