I had an Allstate adjustor lowball a relatively new car back in the 90's after it got creamed from behind by a lincoln towncar while I was sitting at a red light. The final repair bill was way over the original estimate and had the final bill been the original estimate, they would have totalled the car and I would have been stuck with a low $ amount to replace my car with, which was paid off already. Another adjustor sometime later told me the original guy was doing me a favor intentionally. It was no secret that Allstate was intentionally nickel and diming everyone in an effort to lessen the hit they took from Hurricane Andrew. He thought this guy must have thought his company was screwing people and figured this was the best way to open a door to help people keep from getting too screwed. Whether this is true or not, I dont know, but if you can get work started and they are going to be on the hook for finishing it, then I would get repairs started. Definitely collect everything you can to boost your case for increased value of the car, but understand that you are not on stated value insurance, therefore you may have to walk a line between getting as much as you can for repairs and pushing them to say "the hell with it" and offering a cash sum for totalling the car, which likely wont buy you what you want in exchange. Do you even want that car back after that sort of damage?
