| I'd say it gives the hatch just enough weight against the struts so that it shuts nicely without slamming. If your struts are in good condition you can just let go of the hatch about 3/4 of the way down and it shuts itself without falling at gravity speed. Without it I imagine you would have to push down the entire way.
