Twenty years ago, battery cases were made of materials that were slightly porous. As such, it was possible for small amounts of battery acid to seep into the casing material itself. (Indeed we all had to deal with acid damaged battery trays.) If a battery were left long enough on a damp garage or basement floor it could lose it some or all of its charge by grounding through the casing into damp concrete. We were always told if it was on concrete, then put a board underneath. Today's batteries now have casings made of impregnable plastic; and there is no problem storing on concrete. One mfr claims you could even store your battery in a couple of inches of water!
