We have word from Japan that the development for the next-generation Z car has officially begun. According to a source inside Nissan, the next Z received the green light at the end of last year. While the Nissan insider wouldn't reveal details about the car, he did provide helpful hints as to where the project was going. For example, we now know that the powerplants for the car have been determined, and the car will definitely continue with a V-6. Early reports indicate that the next Z will be powered by a newly developed 3.0-liter V-6 (replacing the VQ) and a hybrid system with a 3.5-liter gasoline engine, the same setup in the Infiniti M Hybrid. We reported earlier this year that the Z may get a diesel supplied by Mercedes-Benz. While that's still a possibility, it seems Nissan is studying the diesel marketplace in the U.S. before making a final decision. Nissan is stressing that the next Z needs to be both fuel efficient and possess high performance, so execs have instructed the engineers to concentrate on these two points when developing the car. Nissan feels there's a lot of pressure on them to get the next Z just right in the midst of this changing sports-car market where being environmentally resposible is just as important as being able to go fast. Look for the car to be ready in 2015. Hopefully they make it light. The Evora has a V6 and keeps the weight down... Or boost it. That'd be nice.
