Look for gluelam(inated) pieces from a building/roofing contractor or see if you local distributors have cut pieces available (new gluelams are g-d awful expensive). For a dry bench (vs. oil drenched bench-transmission repair) the gluelams (which come in essentially all length; widths; and thicknesses) can add tremendous mass to a bench. Strength is seldom a real problem for a bench but lack of perceived rigidity and stability is. Wack a hobby grade steel bench with a hammer and it will shake, rattle, and roll (but will seldom actually fall apart). Hit a high mass bench and it will just sit there. Its a lot more pleasant to work on a bench that doesn't ring or shake when you wack on something.
