Yep, I guess the Z-OCD has really kicked in now... Just had to make a mention of my observations over the past few years of ownership. I've heard other Z's start up many times, and as you may know, the Z32 has a pretty unique, very different 'starter noise' than most cars (Sounds pretty cool in my opinion), just sounds more smooth, less hi-pitched, and far different than other cars really (It's hard to explain). Now, specifically my Z's starter, sounds completely different from any other z32 starting up I have ever heard - it sounds almost like any other 'normal' car's starter sound, not like any 300zx starting I have ever witnessed! As far as I know it is an OEM starter, it has all of the shields, and it works perfectly. I am thinking it's possible that they may have changed the manufacturer in later years? (IE: post-'90's cars). Or maybe mine is unknowingly an aftermarket starter.
Just wanted to post this question to see if anyone else noticed other's Z32 starter's sound different from one another. It really bothered me when another Z-owner told me it was different sounding, which just confirmed I don't have hearing issues!
