My guess, it will need the 120k job, which is not cheap and MUST be done. Here are the things I would look for:
- look for burning oil, or oil leaks, don't forget to check the undercarriage
- make sure it's boosting properly
- if he lets you, check the codes on the ECU
- look at the wiring harness, make sure it's not brittle and breaking
- look a the pluming of the hoses to make sure it looks like things are stock looking and not a rats nest of hoses everywhere
- look at the interior, if it's not in good shape, pass on the car, a bad interior, usually means neglect mechanically.
- on the drive look for the 4th gear grind (you have to wind it out in third when shifting),
- make sure the idle smooth and not hunting or seeking, it should purr, otherwise, there's a likely vacuum leak or worse
- don't forget to check the brake and tires
- check for body damage
