If you saw my post on a motor I worked on that had a check ball get into the oil pump here, I have found the same thing on a second motor. We determined that the only place the ball could have gotten through is the opening at the bottom of the filter tree opening. This leads to an oil galley and directly oil pump. This was the first that I had heard of or seen one of these check balls come free of their retainer. Tonight I tore down my old NA motor that was in my Z until my TT swap 2 summers ago. When I pulled the filter tree, one of the check balls was sitting loose in the filter tree housing. In the first motor I saw this, the check ball got into the oil pump (pickup screen was intact) and jammed the holy shit out of the pump. The inner gear stopped, and the crank tore out the drive lobes, the inner gear was broken in three places. The outer gear was in four pieces, the rear cover was bent out and cracked and the front housing was cracked. I need to get the pictures from the shop camera still. It was pretty epic. If I was still driving an NA, I'd be pulling the oil tree to make sure. I have no idea how I got away with it on my motor.
