Message About a year ago I made a post regarding the FSAE team that I was leading and wanted to see if anyone on TT.net was interested in helping us out. I wanted to thank everyone that helped us out and figured I make a post with some action pictures we had while at Nebraska during the competition.

The project consisted of designing and fabricating a small formula style race car and taking it to Nebraska to compete in the FSAE West competition. The event is organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers. It is a fairly new program at the school which I attended (California State University Fullerton and this was our fifth year) and for our year they decided to move the competition from California Speedway Fontana, CA to Lincoln Airpark Lincoln, NE. Designing and fabricating the vehicle was one thing, driving across country on very limited budget was another task that was a challenge. Nonetheless, it was probably one of the greatest achievements for me and memories that I will never forget.

Overall we placed 31st out of 80 teams. Teams participate from all around the world and the fact that we were able to pass technical inspection to actually race was an achievement for us. We were at 9th place until the endurance race (which is a big portion of the points) and during the endurance race the drive nut which held the drive sprocket on the engine came loose and we lost our chain. If you break down in the endurance race you are disqualified and loose all the points for the event. Thus we dropped from 9th to 31st. Nonetheless, it was still an achievement for us and my team mates and I are proud of the outcome. Majority of the team graduated and moved on to bigger and better things and currently the new team is working on fabricating their race car for this year's competition.

On to the pictures.

Prepping the vehicle brake system for the technical inspection. You must pass a vigorous inspection before being able to actually race. After the tech inspection, the team must pass a tilt test, noise test and brake test.

Strapping in for the tilt test. This test the car is tilted on a table and inspected for leaks. Also the test is to make sure the vehicle center of gravity is adequate and the car is not going to flip.

This was the noise test. The vehicle has to be below 100 db. I believe 100 was the number but it might be +/- 10, don't recall off the top of my head.

This was the moment of truth for us as we completed all the inspections, got the last piece of the tech sticker and given the green light to begin the dynamic events. The last inspection was the brake test and many teams were having a difficult locking up all wheels in a controllable manner while keeping the engine on. We were able to go through the brake test with no problems.

Going in for fuel. 93 octane was our choice of fuel.

Team mates relaxing in the trailer after completing the inspection.

Resting up between events.

First dynamic event was the acceleration event which we placed 10th. We could have placed higher if our shifter did not malfunction. Most teams with CVT dominate the acceleration. The 2nd dynamic event was the skid pad which is the picture below.

Another skid pad shot.

Going in for the autocross event.

Thanks to all of our sponsors for making this happen.

Going in for the endurance race.

Lining up for the endurance race.

Endurance race consists of 22 laps equal to 11 miles. Many team do not complete this event as vehicles begin to brake down. After the 11th lap, the vehicle must come in for a driver change, the vehicle is not allowed to be turned off and if turned off it has to be started under it's own power. During the driver change the vehicle is inspected for any leaks and if a leak is found the team is disqualified.

Team photo. Not all members were able to make it to the event.

I have nightmares about that happening...I'd be the poor bastard you'd hear about on the news that gets killed by a softball-size chunk while spreading out my body over the hood and screaming "Nooo!" (Having a conversation about hail damage) - BradZ (FL) on March 25, 2005 at 9:56 PM

Tell your friend that you could take a dump, light it on fire and that would be hotter shit than his car. Probes suck, that's just all there is to it. - 300ZXpert (someday) on April 04, 2005 at 11:35 PM

P.S. You REALLY are on here at ALL hours! And I thought I was bad! :) - zmenon on August 16, 2005 at 3:06 AM
