I heard it may have been simple cost cutting. I'm not sure which theory I believe. You know what is weird though? rotor warpage is not nearly as big an issue now, 20+ years later, as it was when these cars were newer. I remember back in the day unfixable rotor issues led to all kinds of wackiness. Nissan had a machine which would cut the rotors on the car. At the time, there were a million theories. Keep in mind that the rotor and pad generate the heat, not the caliper obviously. I think the temperature of the caliper has very very little to do with the temperature of the rotor. I'm not claiming to be sure about anything. Just speculating.
