Message good balance between factory ECU tuning and something like a ProEFI or AEM stand alone system and it suits my needs. It really just depends on your goals: for the large majority of Z owners, an off-the-shelf tune will suffice; for a lesser large majority a custom tune with Nistune hardware/software will suffice; for the Z enthusiast who needs to step into something that offers more control and precision over his tuning, the Haltech is probably necessary; and for the Z enthusiast who requires more than the Haltech, a ProEFI or AEM stand-alone might be required.

There isn't really a handbook that will point you to the the stand-alone system that is exactly perfect for each Z owner--you just have to do your research and make the decision for yourself, while at the same time deciphering the salesmanship from the sincere advice you will receive from your mechanic and other Z gurus.
