Last year I picked up a Mark IV Supra. During the build I decided to go with a standalone to accommodate some of the goals that I had for the car (E85). My tuner (Hal @ Dynosty) is a big fan of Haltech and highly recommended that I buy one. I trusted him and made the purchase. After getting the unit I wanted to learn more about it and tuning in general. Lucky for me Haltech has two offices:

1) Sydney Australia
2) Lexington, KY

So when I found out that they were having a two day tuning seminar 15 minutes from my house there wasn’t much of a decision.

After spending two full days with them and going over everything that their product will do and how it is made I couldn’t be happier with my purchase! One of the things that I liked best is that they do EVERYTHING in house. They write their own software and assemble their own boards. When there is something needs to be changed they can handle it very quickly. Every other standalone manufacture outsources at least some part of their assembly if not all. Their software basis the tune off of volumetric efficiency…and I believe that they are the only ones doing this.

Another thing that I think that they excel in is the design of their software. It is incredibly user friendly and at the same time completely customizable.

You can download it for free here: [ http://www.haltech.com/product/software/ ]

Also, the E85 integration rocks! As far as I know they are the only ones that have a plug and play kit right now. I mounted a sensor in my fuel return line that detects ethanol content and relays that info to my ECU. So if I wanted to fill my car up with 50% 93 and 50% E85 the ECU would be able to adjust timing, boost, ignition etc . I also like this feature because of the variance of the ethanol content in E85 from pump to pump….it’s a really nice safety feature to have.

Price wise it isn’t as bad as it looks either. When you add up boost controllers, Dual Maf, Selin, some sort of A/F controller and the used price of an ECU it really isn’t that much different from the typical setup and it provides a lot of flexibility going forward.

Obviously people have built really nice cars with AEM, PROEFI etc etc…and I am not knocking them at all but in my opinion Haltech Wins.

My Z will be going back under the knife in 2013 for GTX / Haltech / E85 :)
