| Usually any place I have to turn a bolt a 1/16th of a turn at a time won't have room to fit them and it's box end time anyway. This is the core of what I keep in my travel kit and I find I can do about 90% of everything with it.
Some items I use a lot: the small set of channel lock pliers, the flat tip pliers next to the long angled needle nose, the two ratchets (get Snap-On ratchets, a little heavy on the wallet but they're just flat better than any other ratchet I've ever used, would skip Snap-On sockets though), the small wooden handled file (great for electrical connectors) and the wire roll with the alligator clamps (nice to have a long ground/power bypass for electrical problems). To a garage kit I would add the jack and stands, a trouble light, a stable table of some manner where he can work on something off the car/spread stuff out in an organized manner and some shelving to help keep floor space open.
