Message	attempt to drive the car across town with no water pump, as the OP did in this case. While I agree that the sensor needs to be in contact with the circulating coolent to be effective, the thought here was how far can I drive the car before over heating. You have much better chances of staying in safe parameters with an accurate guage, as the factory guage won't even read hot untill after you've cooked your engine. That said, I wouldn't have done it, as the temps are gonna be higher than what any guage will determine.
