Message Wax isn't designed to last all year especially in sun or salt. I detail several times a year and it goes like this -

- wash the whole car with dish washing liquid. This strips the old wax.
- clay bar the paint surfaces. This step is important and well worth the effort.
- wash the whole car again to remove any residue.
- dry the car with a leaf blower. This gets the water out of the cracks and reduces water spotting.

Sometimes I let the car sit overnight at this point to dry out especially if I'm tired.

- apply polish with an orbital polisher. I use long slow straight strokes to avoid swirling. This removes scratches and swirls.
- wipe off polish with clean microfiber towels.
- apply wax with orbital polisher.
- wipe wax with clean microfiber towels.
- clean the joints and moldings with a toothbrush.
- apply lotion to all moldings.

I picked up an orbital polisher/sander at Harbor Freight. I always start on top and work my way down using a microfiber towel. I prefer a carnauba over a synthetic. Carnauba won't last as long but imho nothing beat's the depth you get with a carnauba especially on a black car.

I might do this over the weekend while the car sits in the garage where there's no direct sunlight. This method is far superior to a basic wash and wax. You can really see the difference even in my old paint.

Wheels are a separate project, different bucket, water and towels.
