Message You're far better off buying a nice modded Z compared to
building one from a poor condition to start with...financially.
Unless you just love to turn the wrenches yourself and really want a project that can tie up your weekends for a year, there
are deals on Z cars all over. People seldom get much of the
mod. money and labor cost back out of their car when they
go to sell it. You will often see examples where over $20k in
mods alone (including a new paint job) have been put into a car that is selling for $15k. You get a much better discount when you let the other guy pay for all those new parts and labor. And be sure the seller can show receipts for all the work, and if possible drive a car before buying it. Things like non-working air conditioning, an unsteady idle, or the dreaded rod knock can get costly fast.
