Message Ok so I have been having an issue with no low end in my 300zx. I have also had a ticking for as long as I can remeber that I swore was lifters. Turns out the shop that did my rebuild had welded my cam gears due to the fact I had JWT HD Valve springs installed. Little to my knowledge this effectively disabled my VTC system. On top of that, check out the pic and you can see where the welds they did do, didnt even last! ALL FOUR welds were broken on 1 cam gear.

So after much advisement and with some much needed help from Mr. Rick Torrey (thanks again man, still searching for that guitar) we got the old gears off, and the new BDE gears on. Good news is, that the tick I was hearing is GONE! Looks like it was a VTC tick (unplugging selenoids didnt help, but it was likely due to the upgraded valve springs not a malfunctioning selenoid) because its all gone now. Aside from the small exhaust leak I am still tracking down it purrs like a kitten again. Bad news is, I still dont have any low end torque.

So first lets start with a couple pics of my old gears just for the heck of it:

Now I want to ask... I have a lot of mods done on this Z, but it is an automatic (I dont wanna hear it, you buy what you can get your hands on and its hard finding a Z thats exactly what you want in good shape). I cannot spin the tires from a dead stop. It doesnt matter if I powerbrake it, or if I just floor it from a stop I cannot spin my tires till around 4000 RPM's (or 15-20 mph) in first gear. I am running upgraded turbos but id say they are equal to sport 500's or so, nothing fancy. Problem is I have seen videos of mostly stock Twin Turbo's with automatics just smoking the tires all the way down the street. Now dont get me wrong I dont wanna be that punk ass thats peeling out everywhere he goes, but I think its a good reference that shows I am missing low-end torque. Any ideas?

Now we still need to hook the car up to a Conzult system and make absolute sure the VTC is working, but we had an "ECU not responding" error when Rick and I tried it. I am going to check the wires as I did have an EFI harness replacment when the rebuild was done and perhaps something wasnt hooked up correctly. But if the VTC wasnt working wouldnt I be able to hear it?

Anyway this wasnt really a tech post just a "Hey look what I found" post.

Peace
