Matsuo-san, designer of the 240z

Matsuo-san (seated) as a young designer, going over the various 240z concept drawings

Matsuo-san explained that he saw an airplane cockput using gas struts to open the canopy, and he proposed this as a solution for opening the 240z hatch. He said that this was the first application in an automotive use, and if he had a patent on this idea, he would be very rich today.

240z Concept - Matsuo-san explained that the headlight covers were deemed illegal by NHTSA, and the NHTSA also mandated that the headlight height be at least ~30cm (if i recall) above the road surface. This forced the headlights to be higher than he had originally intended.

Randy Rodriguez (370z designer) gave a great story about his families history with Datsun vehicles, his obsession with the Z dating back to high school, and his frequent portfolio projects in Design School focusing on Z Cars. He originally went to Medical school, but hated it and dropped out (much to the disappointment of his parents) and worked construction & other jobs to save up and also got a scholarship to The Detroit College of Creative Studies. More on him here

This was an awesome ZCon. The TT.net dinner, trip to the Nissan Test track, and the excellent stories by the two designers were great highlights. For being here a week without my Z, it was well worth the flight.
