| Well, Yes and No... I think if you have a massive drag slick and are able to get traction with the 4.08 yes it does produce better 1/4 mile times. But if you have a shorter street tire with a 4.08... all you will be doing is getting sideways if you are putting down any kind of power. Going sideways is fun but it is not productive. What I'm saying is the taller gears are used to maintain traction on a shorter tire which produce better 1/4 times than a shorter tire with shorter gears. On another forum I am on that deals with older s30 z's... the taller differential gears are the more desirable gears and are actually very rare. s30/s130 5-speeds and 300zx 5-speeds are very similar as far as gearing. I would say 5th in a s30/130 5 speed with differential ratio staying constant would go probably/theoretically 20mph less than a 300zx 5 speed.
I believe I looked at a ratio graph awhile back and they said the theoretical limit of a s30/130 5 speed is 180mph and using the same differential a z32 5-speed is 200mph. I think the differential ratio was 3.36:1 that they were using in comparison. Im just thinking about in perspective of designing a sleeper you dont necessarily want to run a tall tire on, you should run a tall diff gear.
