that they don't turn turbulent flow back to laminar. They give slightly more energy to the turbulent air flow to be able to double-back behind the car decreasing the car's wake and drag. It's the same benefit as dimpling a golf ball. But fundamentally this is a band aid fix for a shitty aero design. The Z's aero likely isn't bad enough to necessitate vortex generators, nor is the Prius, and probably most hatchbacks and fastbacks. They are, however, very useful in car design as there's no easy way to gently close down the flow behind the back of a car without significantly increasing it's length/weight but the benefits are second order if at all. Ni[x]it is trained in this stuff and could probably give a better answer if he was still around. What happened to him? Someone go wake him up!
