Message into the heads and their tips come closer to the lifters causing more preload on the lifters which will hold the valves open if the change is excessive. If your machine shop butchered the valves and seats, sinking them too far, and did not trim the tips to compensate, this would be my guess of what you are seeing. New lifters will not fix this.


The FSM does not list a dimension for measuring valve tip height relative to the cylinder head, but I have measured 0.965" from the valve tip to the top of the valve guide on many good, low-mileage heads (note, if your valve guides were removed, this number is meaningless unless the guides were re-installed perfectly).
