I have scars on my thumbs from where, during my first timing belt job on my first Z, the gears spun under the force of the valve springs and caught my thumbs between the intake and exhaust cam gears.

You are fighting the tension of the valve springs.

I used a strap wrench It also helped me torque my crank bolt
