Message Without a doubt it's something other than the speedometer. Just to let everyone know, Russ returned his gauge cluster to me after I had repaired the speedometer. The problem with that speedometer board was very obvious. It was the typical corrosion where the circuit traces fall apart.

The board wasn't all that bad as it actually only had one trace that was open. But it definitely wasn't able to work because the trace, which was the main signal trace was completely open. After repairing it and reinforcing some of the soldering connections for good measure, the board worked fine. I was surprised when Russ had told me it had stopped working again.

Russ returned the gauge cluster to me and the first thing I did was to connect the gauge cluster to my test equipment because I wanted to see the nonworking speedometer. Instead, I found the speedometer to be working quite well. Some electronics can seem to work but actually have a problem which may not show up until its been operating for a while.

I let the board run at various speeds the whole evening. It never acted up once. I wanted to make sure we could without a doubt eliminate the posibility of the speedometer being bad so I replaced it with what is probably the best condition speedometer gauge I had ever seen. And of course I test the replacement board to my satisfaction that it was indeed reliable. Russ's gauge cluster lens was also damaged in shipment somehow. When I saw this after unpacking it, I immediately contacted Russ to find out if he knew anything about it being damaged. It had a crack in the lens running from the trip meter shaft hole to the corner next to it.

Russ said he had no knowledge about the crack. I knew it didn't have a crack before I shipped it because I take pictures of everything I work on before and after I work on it to document its condition. I told him not to worry about it that I had plenty of lens on hand and actually had one which was in better condition than his (even if it didn't have the crack) and replaced it at no cost.

Strange things can happen in shipping. Ive had a couple of situations. One thing I found that is a common problem with shipping the gauge clusters is that the 1990 clusters boost or oil psi gauge needles may become inoperative after shipping due to their design where the pin in the needle arm may become dislogged or jammed to the pendulum arm that operates it. I've had this happen to three gauge clusters. I've even created an instructional writup to give people on how to check it and what to do if this happens.

I'm confidant now that Russ's car has some other problem that is causing the speedometer to stop working. Russ, I know you said you put a new speed sensor in that you got from COZ but I would really like you to put the old speed sensor back in if you still have it. At least it will help you to eliminate it as the problem if there is no change. I know the one that's in there is new but you never know.
