Message flywheel is, the more stored energy it has at any given rpm. A 12 lb flywheel would have to be turning much higher rpm at launch than an 18 lb flywheel would, to offer the same punch. You pay for this later down the track, because you have to accelerate that heavier flywheel to higher rpm as you finish the run, but apparently drag racers have found the tradeoff to be worth it.
