Beyond that, what do you think someone is willing to pay/ a fair price. Jobs vary in difficulty, but all jobs have unknowns. As an example, changing out injectors. It's generally a PITA to get the plenum off, so you charge more, right? But what if they've had the plenum off before so it makes it much faster so you can charge less. Unknowns? Bad hoses, rounded bolts, rusted bolts, breakages. Well some unknowns can be assumed and accounted for. (Known unknowns) For example: During the plenum pull for the injectors, hot nipples on the brake/clutch booster hoses go to cause the hoses to dry and become brittle, have some on hand and include it in the fee explaining why. But how about unknown, unknowns? Rusted bolts, broken parts, etc. That is where you hit the middle ground. Is it your fault, or just difficult taking more of your time? Is it just something you aren't fast at but shouldn't cost the customer? Or did they break something before you *had* to fix to complete the job? Call them and authorize the work. Not too hard, easy to call a Nissan dealership to see what they charge, know that it's unreasonable and then charge less. ;-)
