But I don't think technology is where it needs to be for us to make such a drastic change. The government wants to impose more strict regulation on emissions, and doesn't want to give everything, or everyone, time to catch up. I see power companies investing hundreds of millions of dollars on emission controls and monitoring, because it's going on a system already in place, like you said. To try and replace such a thing as one 500MW coal unit with solar would be nearly impossible currently. Imagine the size of the facility needed for all of those solar panels. Plus you have things like heavy industry that require huge amounts of power to operate, especially when the economy bounces back.
