| If you're just going the basic wrenches and standard tools route a yoga mat (with the small holes) will save you quite a few bucks and you should be able to find a wide selection of colors/thickness/texture to your liking. It should be noted that just like the brand-name rubber mesh liners, there's a chance they can hold moisture in those little pockets and leave slight corrosion marks on tools. So if you have or plan to get precision polished tools and/or have moisture concerns you can go the indoor/outdoor carpet route. Some of it even has marine backing for extra moisture resistance and once again, you'll find a ton of color and texture choices to play with.
